HOW THIS TEST WORKS

How How Do I Feel Most Loved? works

How version core-v1 is scored, and what it can and cannot tell you.

How it is scored

This test looks at six ways people give and receive affection: kind words, time together, helping hands, thoughtful gifts, warm touch, and being understood. The idea that people feel loved in different ways is popular, and research on it is still growing. Studies find that what matters most is that partners notice and respond to each other's needs (Reis and others, 2004; Impett and others, 2024). The style names in this test are our own.

Part 1 has 24 sentences, four for each style. Each one gives 0 to 4 points to its style. Part 2 has 30 pairs of choices. Every style is paired with every other style twice, and the choice you pick gives 3.1 points to its style. Every style can earn the same total, so the scores compare fairly.

Each style score runs from 0 to 100. Your main style is your highest score. Most people enjoy more than one kind of affection, so look at all six.

What it cannot tell you

This test is for learning about yourself and starting good talks with the people you love. It is not a diagnosis, and it cannot tell you whether a relationship is healthy.

Research has not shown that matching affection styles makes couples happier. Caring about each other's needs matters more than any label.

Your style can change with the person and the time in your life. If two styles are close, you may enjoy both about equally. This version has not yet been tested with a large group of people, so we do not yet know how accurate it is.
