HOW THIS TEST WORKS
How How Well Do I Apologize? works
How version core-v1 is scored, and what it can and cannot tell you.
How it is scored
Research on apologies finds that they work best when they include owning what you did and offering to make it right, along with naming the effect and saying sorry (Lewicki and others, 2016), and when they match what the hurt person needs (Fehr and Gelfand, 2010). People also differ in how often they apologize; some apologize much more than others for the same things (Schumann and Ross, 2010).
This test looks at five areas: owning it, naming the effect, saying sorry sincerely, making amends, and changing what you do. Each area has eight sentences. Four describe a strong habit and four describe the opposite. Each answer gives 0 to 4 points. Each area score runs from 0 to 100, and your overall score is the average of the five.

What it cannot tell you
This test is for learning about yourself. It is not a diagnosis. Do not use it to hire, fire, or judge people, or as proof in a dispute.
How you apologize can depend on the person, the setting, and your culture. A high score does not mean you should apologize more. Apologies are for real harm.
This version has not yet been tested with a large group of people, so we do not yet know how accurate it is.
