HOW THIS TEST WORKS

How Am I Assertive? works

How version core-v2 is scored, and what it can and cannot tell you.

How it is scored

This test is based on a long line of research on assertiveness. It describes three common ways people handle their needs and feelings: holding back (passive), speaking up with respect (assertive), and pushing hard (aggressive) (Alberti and Emmons, 1970; Rathus, 1973). Assertiveness training has good research support for helping people speak up (Speed, Goldstein, and Goldfried, 2018).

Part 1 has 18 sentences, six for each style. Each one gives 0 to 4 points to its style. Part 2 has 12 pairs of choices. Every style is paired with every other style four times, and the choice you pick gives 3.1 points to its style. Every style can earn the same total, so the scores compare fairly.

Each style score runs from 0 to 100. Your main style is your highest score. Most people use all three styles at times, so look at all of them.

What it cannot tell you

This test is for learning about yourself. It is not a diagnosis. Do not use it to hire, fire, or judge people.

The assertive answers can sound like the "right" ones, so people may choose them more often than they really act that way. Try to answer for how you really act, not how you wish you acted. Your style can also change with the person and the setting.

This version has not yet been tested with a large group of people, so we do not yet know how accurate it is.
