HOW THIS TEST WORKS

How Am I Burned Out? works

How version core-v1 is scored, and what it can and cannot tell you.

How it is scored

Burnout is not a medical diagnosis. The World Health Organization describes it as a result of long-term workplace stress that has not been managed well (WHO, 2019). Researchers describe three core signs: exhaustion, pulling away or feeling cynical, and feeling less effective (Maslach, Schaufeli, and Leiter, 2001; Maslach and Leiter, 2016). This test also looks at whether rest still helps and at body signs of stress.

This test looks at five areas: exhaustion, pulling away, feeling less effective, not recovering, and body signs. Each area has eight sentences. Half describe a burnout sign and half describe the opposite, so you cannot get a high score just by agreeing with everything. Each answer gives 0 to 4 points.

Each area score runs from 0 to 100. Your overall score is the average of the five areas. Scores are read as Low (0 to 33), Medium (34 to 66), or High (67 to 100). These levels show how you answered. They do not compare you with other people.

PersonalitySite.com wrote all of these questions and descriptions. They are not copied from any burnout scale or other test.

What it cannot tell you

This test is for learning about yourself. It is not a diagnosis, and it is not a medical or official burnout assessment. It cannot tell you if you have depression or any other condition. Do not use it for work, insurance, legal, or health decisions about anyone.

Burnout and depression share many signs, and tiredness can have many causes, like health problems. If you are worried, please see a doctor.

This version has not yet been tested with a large group of people, so we do not yet know how accurate it is.
