HOW THIS TEST WORKS

How How Culturally Aware Am I? works

How version core-v1 is scored, and what it can and cannot tell you.

How it is scored

This test is based on research on cultural intelligence, the ability to work well across cultures. Researchers describe it in four parts: wanting to learn, knowing about differences, thinking about your own assumptions, and adapting what you do (Earley and Ang, 2003), and link it with better results in diverse settings (Ang and others, 2007). Cultures differ in how much is said in words versus left to the setting (Hall, 1976), and friendly contact between groups tends to build understanding (Pettigrew and Tropp, 2006).

This test looks at five areas: curiosity about other cultures, learning about differences, noticing your assumptions, adapting how you communicate, and respect and inclusion. Each area has eight sentences. Four describe a strong habit and four describe the opposite. Each answer gives 0 to 4 points. Each area score runs from 0 to 100, and your overall score is the average of the five.

What it cannot tell you

This test is for learning about yourself. It is not a diagnosis, and it does not measure bias. Do not use it to hire, fire, or judge people.

People tend to rate themselves well on this, and self-reports may not match how others see you. Your result also depends on how much contact you have had with other cultures.

This version has not yet been tested with a large group of people, so we do not yet know how accurate it is.
