HOW THIS TEST WORKS

How How Well Do I Delegate? works

How version core-v1 is scored, and what it can and cannot tell you.

How it is scored

Delegation means handing off real responsibility for work to others. Research finds that delegation tends to improve performance and how people feel about their work (Leana, 1986), that leaders delegate more when they trust their people (Yukl and Fu, 1999), that people feel more able and committed when they have meaningful work and a say in how to do it (Spreitzer, 1995), and that some people feel more uneasy about delegating than others (Akinola and others, 2018).

This test looks at five areas: letting go of tasks, matching work to people, handing off clearly, trusting without micromanaging, and supporting and giving credit. Each area has eight sentences. Four describe a strong habit and four describe the opposite. Each answer gives 0 to 4 points. Each area score runs from 0 to 100, and your overall score is the average of the five.

What it cannot tell you

This test is for learning about yourself. It is not a diagnosis or a performance rating. Do not use it to hire, fire, promote, rank, or rate people.

How much you can delegate depends on your team, workload, and role. A lower score does not mean you are a poor leader.

This version has not yet been tested with a large group of people, so we do not yet know how accurate it is.
