HOW THIS TEST WORKS

How How Well Do I Handle Difficult Conversations? works

How version core-v1 is scored, and what it can and cannot tell you.

How it is scored

Difficult conversations are talks about things that matter, where people may disagree or feel strongly. Writers on these talks describe three layers: what happened, how people feel, and what it means for each person's sense of who they are (Stone and others, 1999). Research finds that people often stay silent because they expect speaking up to go badly (Edmondson, 1999), and that feedback about the issue rather than the person works better (Kluger and DeNisi, 1996).

This test looks at five areas: facing hard talks, preparing, staying calm, being clear and kind, and listening to the other side. Each area has eight sentences. Four describe a strong habit and four describe the opposite. Each answer gives 0 to 4 points. Each area score runs from 0 to 100, and your overall score is the average of the five.

PersonalitySite.com wrote all of these questions and descriptions. They are not copied from any other test.

What it cannot tell you

This test is for learning about yourself. It is not a diagnosis or a performance rating. Do not use it to hire, fire, promote, rank, or rate people.

How hard talks go also depends on the other person and the setting. Avoiding a talk can be the right choice when it is not safe. A lower score does not mean something is wrong with you.

This version has not yet been tested with a large group of people, so we do not yet know how accurate it is.
