HOW THIS TEST WORKS
How How Empathetic Am I? works
How version core-v1 is scored, and what it can and cannot tell you.
How it is scored
Empathy is not one thing. Researchers describe several parts: seeing things from someone else's point of view, feeling with them, and caring about them (Davis, 1983). Some call these thinking empathy and feeling empathy. Research also shows that empathy is not fixed and can be trained (Teding van Berkhout and Malouff, 2016).
This test looks at five areas: seeing their side, feeling with others, caring and kindness, noticing feelings, and showing you care. Each area has eight sentences. Half describe the skill and half describe the opposite, so you cannot get a high score just by agreeing with everything. Each answer gives 0 to 4 points.
Each area score runs from 0 to 100, and a higher score means stronger empathy. Your overall score is the average of the five areas. Scores are read as Low (0 to 33), Medium (34 to 66), or High (67 to 100). These levels show how you answered. They do not compare you with other people.

What it cannot tell you
This test is for learning about yourself. It is not a diagnosis. It cannot tell you if you have any condition, and it should never be used to label someone as lacking empathy. Do not use it to make work, hiring, or legal decisions about anyone.
People tend to rate themselves as kind and caring. Your answers can also change with stress and tiredness. Some people, including many autistic people, read feelings differently, and that is not the same as not caring.
This version has not yet been tested with a large group of people, so we do not yet know how accurate it is.
