HOW THIS TEST WORKS

How How Forgiving Am I? works

How version core-v1 is scored, and what it can and cannot tell you.

How it is scored

Forgiveness means letting go of anger and the wish for revenge after being hurt. Researchers describe not forgiving as wanting to avoid the person and wanting to get back at them (McCullough, 2000), and find that guided steps help many people forgive over time (Wade and others, 2014). Forgiving is different from getting back together (Freedman, 1998), and self-forgiveness means owning a mistake and letting go of self-punishment (Hall and Fincham, 2005).

This test looks at five areas: letting go of grudges, letting go of revenge, understanding the other person, forgiving yourself, and forgiving with limits. Each area has eight sentences. Four describe a healthy habit and four describe the opposite. Each answer gives 0 to 4 points. Each area score runs from 0 to 100, and your overall score is the average of the five.

What it cannot tell you

This test is for learning about yourself. It is not a diagnosis. Do not use it to hire, fire, or judge people.

A lower score is not a flaw. Some hurts are deep, and it can be healthy to take time, or to choose not to forgive. A high score does not mean you should forgive everything. Ideas about forgiveness also differ across faiths and cultures.

This version has not yet been tested with a large group of people, so we do not yet know how accurate it is.
