HOW THIS TEST WORKS

How Am I a Good Communicator? works

How version core-v1 is scored, and what it can and cannot tell you.

How it is scored

This test looks at communication as a set of skills you can learn. Research describes good communication as getting your message across in a way that also fits the person and the moment (Spitzberg and Cupach, 1984). It is also based on ideas about clear "I" statements (Gordon, 1970) and research showing that how people start and handle hard talks shapes how they turn out (Gottman, 1994).

This test looks at five areas: saying things clearly, listening well, speaking up honestly, staying calm in hard talks, and reading the room. Each area has eight sentences. Half describe the skill and half describe the opposite, so you cannot get a high score just by agreeing with everything. Each answer gives 0 to 4 points.

Each area score runs from 0 to 100, and a higher score means a stronger skill. Your overall score is the average of the five areas. Scores are read as Low (0 to 33), Medium (34 to 66), or High (67 to 100). These levels show how you answered. They do not compare you with other people.

What it cannot tell you

This test is for learning about yourself. It is not a diagnosis. Do not use it to make work or hiring decisions about anyone.

Most people rate their own communication higher than others do. It can help to ask people you trust how you come across.

This version has not yet been tested with a large group of people, so we do not yet know how accurate it is.
