HOW THIS TEST WORKS

How Am I a Good Listener? works

How version core-v1 is scored, and what it can and cannot tell you.

How it is scored

This test looks at listening as a set of skills you can learn. It is based on the idea of active listening (Rogers and Farson, 1957), and on research about active and empathic listening, which looks at noticing, understanding, and responding to what people say (Bodie, 2011). Studies show that people who are listened to well feel more understood (Weger and others, 2014).

This test looks at five areas: giving full attention, letting people finish, understanding feelings, asking good questions, and listening before fixing. Each area has eight sentences. Half describe the skill and half describe the opposite, so you cannot get a high score just by agreeing with everything. Each answer gives 0 to 4 points.

Each area score runs from 0 to 100, and a higher score means a stronger skill. Your overall score is the average of the five areas. Scores are read as Low (0 to 33), Medium (34 to 66), or High (67 to 100). These levels show how you answered. They do not compare you with other people.

What it cannot tell you

This test is for learning about yourself. It is not a diagnosis, and it does not test your hearing. Do not use it to make work or hiring decisions about anyone.

Most people think they listen better than they really do, so your scores may be a little higher than how others see you. It can help to ask someone you trust how well you listen.

This version has not yet been tested with a large group of people, so we do not yet know how accurate it is.
