HOW THIS TEST WORKS
How How Am I Doing as a Manager? works
How version core-v1 is scored, and what it can and cannot tell you.
How it is scored
This self-check is based on research on leader behavior. Studies find that two kinds of behavior matter a lot: setting clear direction and showing care for people (Judge and others, 2004). Fair decisions build trust (Colquitt and others, 2001), support from a manager is linked with people staying (Eisenberger and others, 2002), managers who believe people can grow coach more (Heslin and others, 2006), and teams where people feel safe to speak up learn more (Edmondson, 1999). Leaders also tend to rate themselves differently, and often higher, than others rate them (Fleenor and others, 2010).
This test looks at five areas: setting clear direction, coaching and growing people, caring for people, being fair and consistent, and communicating and listening. Each area has eight sentences. Four describe a strong habit and four describe the opposite. Each answer gives 0 to 4 points. Each area score runs from 0 to 100, and your overall score is the average of the five.

What it cannot tell you
This is a private self-check, based only on your own view. It is not a diagnosis, and it is not a rating of you as a manager. Do not use it to hire, promote, set pay, discipline, rank, or rate any manager, and do not use it in a performance review. It has not been tested for those uses.
Self-ratings often differ from how others see us, and managers tend to rate themselves higher than their teams do. Your answers also depend on your workload, training, and support. To know how you are really doing, ask your team.
This version has not yet been tested with a large group of people, so we do not yet know how accurate it is.
